5 Predictions For “Avengers: Endgame”

A Conspiracy Theory by Carmelo Chimera

After months of therapy, soul-searching, and self care, I’ve just about recovered from the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Well, not recovered. But you learn to live with it.

I felt personally responsible – what could I have done differently? I took over 100 people to see the movie through one of my store’s giveaways but when the credits rolled the excitement turned to sobbing. One customer even punched me in the arm. I’m taking 130 members of our Community to see Endgame at a private screening this weekend, so hopefully that makes up for it.

Fortunately, in just a few hours the Avengers will (hopefully) earn their name in Avengers: Endgame. I’ve put together my predictions/hopes for the movie here. Some of this is based on actual rumors, some based on the comics, and some are the complete fabrication of my imagination.

So, I guess what I’m saying is, it’s not technically spoilers to its SPOILERISH because some of the rumors that inspired me may be true.

Also, some of this may seem obvious based on trailers and such. I’m building off the obvious to get us to the more…fantastic parts of my theory. If that makes sense. So hold your judgment until the end.

Avengers Endgame review

1. 5 Years Gone

My Prediction: “Endgame” will take place 5 years in the future, or at least transition to it.

Why I Believe This: Whenever there’s a cliffhanger, there’s a strong instinct from the fans that the next story will pick up where the last one left off. But I don’t think that’s the case here. It would cheapen both movies – they can’t stand on their own. Each needs to be a complete, well-rounded movie.

And it really sells short the sorrow of Infinity War if the story just keeps going, “and then they undid it and won after all and live happily ever after.” Booo-urns.

That’s why I think we are definitely getting a time jump.

I’m not going to get into the conspiracy theories behind ScarJo’s constantly changing hair because we know there’s fake CGI in these trailers. I just think it makes sense narratively.

2. Some Assembly Required

My Prediction: The Avengers will be a broken mess at the beginning and Act One will be about bringing them together:

  • Thor is no longer worthy to lift his hammer, because he feels like a failure. He’ll need to forgive himself before he can lift it once more.
  • Hawkeye’s entire family died in the snap. He’s become the mercenary Ronin and Black Widow will have to track him down.
  • Tony is obviously lost in space
  • Banner still can’t change into the Hulk

Why I Think This: Further to my point above, we have to feel like there’s some consequences for all this. Otherwise it will be like Infinity War was a pointless prelude to the real movie.

Unlike my first theory, which is based on narrative formula, I’m basing this off trailer tidbits. For example, Thor looks like he’s about to go up against Eminem in 8 mile in a rap battle. We know we see Hawkeye as Ronin, looking all tragic, after a flashback of teaching his daughter to fire bows and arrows. In fact I think this is how the movie will start, a flashback to them dying in the snap.

3. The Prophecy Will Come True

My Prediction: The Avengers will rally, fly to Thanos, and all of them will be massacred and die except for Tony. And we never see any of that. What we see is the surviving Tony come back in time, just before they leave for this mission, to warn them. Instead, they change strategies, heading backward through time to stop Thanos from building the Gauntlet to level the playing field.

Why I Think This: I cannot imagine a scenario where the Avengers, even with Captain Marvel, stand a chance against a Thanos with a fully powered Infinity Gauntlet and years of practicing with it. But more importantly – they told us this was coming.

Tony has a vision of this defeat in Age of Ultron. And I expect Endgame to payoff for the entire MCU, including this plot point.

4. The Phantom Menace

My Prediction: Thanos will not be the final villain in the movie. What I believe will happen is, the Red Skull as a floating wraith with no soul stone to protect any longer will hover around him like an evil Jiminy Cricket for most of the movie.

Then, when Thanos is at his most vulnerable, the Red Skull will steal the Infinity Gauntlet. Now, evil super Hitler will basically be God.

Why I Think This: First of all, I can’t imagine anything scarier. The Red Skull is one of if not the most frightening, menacing, formidable, and despicable villains in the Marvel Universe. Thanos, for all his menace, still has noble intentions.

Second of all, the Russo Brothers have hinted at this in a tweet. They said:

“Red Skull is free to leave Vormir, and he is also free to pursue his desire for an Infinity Stone. – Russo Brothers

This is, after all, what the Skull has been after all along. But I really think this because…

5. Captain America’s Final Sacrifice

My Prediction: Only one Avenger will outright die in the movie, and it will be Captain America.

When all hope seems lost, Captain America will wield Thor’s hammer to get close enough to the Skull. They’ll wrestle over the Gauntlet, their wills battling. Steve Rogers’ will must overcome the Skull’s, undoing the snap…and killing both men in the process.

Why I Think This: We know this is (likely) Chris Evans’ last outing as Captain America. I can’t think of a better way for him to go out then sacrificing himself to save the universe from his worst and oldest enemy. This is also a bit of a throwback to the comics wherein the two fought over the Cosmic Cube.

There’s also another fundamental problem – we expect some deaths as contracts end, but if they’re already resurrecting people with the Gauntlet, why should any Avenger stay dead? I think Rogers disintegrating while using the Gauntlet is the only definitive way for him to die.
